Summary
An exciting opportunity for Life Science PhD graduates wishing to pursue a creative career as a Medical Writer, using their knowledge and expertise in a creative and inspirational way outside of a laboratory setting.
Job Description
The Company
Our client is a leading Medical Education Agency, working with large Pharmaceutical companies in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including infertility, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular and genetic diseases. They pride themselves on their staff development and training strategies, and are looking for highly motivated PhD Graduates who can demonstrate creativity, versatility, and a genuine willingness to learn.
The client offers a structured career progression path and excellent personnel and professional training programme, within 6 core services: Marketing / KOL Development; Writing and Editing; Publication Planning; Creative Design; Multimedia; Internal Meetings Management.
The Role
Writing for a Communications Agency is very different from writing a medical paper. A good Medical Writer is able to write in a way that is not only lively, but will also attract and sustain the interest of a variety of audiences. You will have to include accurate facts and information relating to the therapeutic area in question and also convey the main messages from the client, making constructive and creative suggestions in the process. This role will involve a variety of media, including posters, papers and abstracts, in addition to other congress publications such as monographs, slide kits, etc. Another key area will be preparing pre-launch and launch products, publication planning and attending conferences if required by the client.
The transition from writing scientific pieces/papers to writing for a Communications Agency is quite challenging and does not come easily to everybody. This is why our client is looking for applicants with a natural aptitude for agency writing, whom they will train for 6 months or more, before a closely-mentored probationary role for a further 3-6 months. During this time a trainee's work will be constantly appraised and commented on, in a constructive way, in order to develop the trainee as an Agency Writer.
The Medical Writer will be expected to liaise directly with major pharmaceutical clients on high profile projects, and an ability to establish a rapport is a highly desirable asset.
Benefits
• BUPA private healthcare cover
• 25 days holiday per year increasing to 27 days after long service
• Company pension scheme
• Personal Development Plans and training
• Profit-related pay scheme
• Life assurance and permanent health insurance
• Childcare vouchers
Experience
The successful applicants will have a PhD (or similar) in a Life Science, with some subsequent experience in a Research or Writing-oriented role.
In addition to a relevant PhD, you will need a flair for writing and a strong desire to pursue a communication-based career within the Pharmaceutical industry. Experience of working for a Pharmaceutical company, or within a research role, would also be beneficial.
You should be able to write clearly and creatively, and strong grammar is essential. You must be proactive in tracking projects and chasing comments from clients, authors or speakers, and there will be a strong emphasis on building rapport with clients and key opinion leaders (KOLs), in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
